Massa Vecchia Aleatico Passito 2011
$100.00
This cult estate in Maremma produces only very small quantities of wine each year – and the allocation that we are able to acquire is usually allotted before it even arrives in the country. The passito, made from semi-dried red aleatico grapes, is a rich, full bodied dessert wine that works perfectly as a cheese accompaniment, or with chocolate-based dishes.
Francesca Sfondrini took over Massa Vecchia from her mother’s husband in 2009 after spending several years learning winemaking at the farm. The wines of Massa Vecchia have gained a cult following; they are produced in miniscule amounts, and are truly designed to be ‘authentic’. The winemaker Francesca is also a philosopher, and the thought that surrounds these wines is clearly the result of deep consideration.
